What Is a Chimney Inspection?

A proper chimney inspection can cover just the basics of your chimney structure and components, or it can involve a meticulous appraisal of the entire chimney system, including parts that normally can’t be seen.

Basic chimney inspections, the kind we recommend once a year, include all visible parts of the chimney and its components. Your inspector will focus on many areas, such as:

  • Chimney cap
  • Chimney crown
  • Chimney flashing
  • Leaky chimney issues
  • Signs of a chimney fire
  • Drafting problems
  • and more.

This inspection will uncover early signs of damage and malfunction and allow you to resolve the issues before they become expensive and dangerous.

Our chimney inspectors are also trained chimney repair technicians and can often make recommendations at the time of the inspection.

All Chimney Sweep Cleanings come with a Level 1 and partial Level 2 Inspection.

Level 1 Chimney Inspection

A level 1 chimney inspection is required annually, as is a chimney cleaning, so a level 1 inspection can be done at the same time as a chimney sweep or cleaning. A level 1 chimney inspection is recommended if you have not noticed a change in the chimney’s performance and there has been no change to the appliance or venting system but you still need to ensure the safety of the chimney and heating system. In a level 1 chimney inspection, our technicians will examine all accessible interior and exterior components of your chimney, heating appliance and connections. Each component is looked over, including the damper, firebox, smoke chamber, cap, crown and masonry and/or structural elements. If any problems are found, they will be reported to you and recommendations for repair will be given.

Level 2 Chimney Inspection

A level 2 chimney inspection is required as a NFPA standard upon the sale or transfer of property. We provide this service for buyers and sellers. A level 2 inspection is also required whenever there are any changes made to your system, such as a change in fuel type, chimney relining, furnace replacement or new stove or appliance installation. In any of these cases, our technicians have the experience and qualifications to cover all of the necessary parts of a level 2 inspection. The inspection includes all that is involved in a level 1 inspection, as well as an in-depth inspection of each part of the chimney system. Internal joints and surfaces will be thoroughly checked for issues, and a special camera will be utilized to take a close look at the inside of the flue and chimney. Concerns will be reported to the homeowner, and estimates for repairs will be given.

Level 3 Chimney Inspection

Level 3 chimney inspections are the most detailed that can be done. These are only required when there are serious problems that need immediate attention. As well as covering all areas that are done in a level 1 and 2 inspection, a level 3 inspection requires the removal of components for better access such as the heating system, interior walls, flue pipes, chimney crowns or masonry.

What About Inspections for Gas Fireplaces?

Gas fireplaces and stoves typically don’t use a traditional chimney, but they do use a vent pipe and create exhaust particles. For this reason, it’s important that you schedule periodic safety inspections to keep these appliances in safe running condition.

Although gas fireplaces don’t generate the same high levels of creosote as wood-burning appliances, they do generate moisture, and if not serviced properly they can generate Carbon Monoxide. Our inspection may also reveal signs of corrosion which should be remedied.

Your gas fireplace inspector will check your vent system and go over all the parts and components, including gas lines and burners, when servicing your gas appliance.

More Involved Chimney Inspections

In certain cases, a more involved chimney inspection is needed. For example:

  • When buying or selling your home a Level 2 Inspection is recommended by National Fire Protection Association.
  • When your chimney may not comply with California building and safety codes
  • After a chimney fire or weather event that may have caused interior or exterior chimney damage
  • When you’re altering your system, such as by adding a gas fireplace insert to your masonry fireplace a Level 2 Inspection is recommended as well.
  • When major damage is known to exist but cannot be assessed with a basic inspection
  • These chimney inspections often involve the use of video imaging technology, which gives your technician a clear view of “unseen” areas within your chimney system.
