What is a Chimney Chase?

A chimney chase is a wood-framed structure that houses stainless steel flues for manufactured fireplaces. They are usually clad with vinyl siding. It is important to keep water out of a chimney chase.

What is a Chimney Chase Cover?

A chimney chase cover is a metal cover for a chimney chase, and it fits over it like a shoebox lid. The most important function of chimney caps and chimney chase covers is to keep water out of the chimney system. These covers have other functions, too, such as keeping out animals, leaves, dirt, and other debris.

Materials Used for Chase Covers

You may be ordering a chimney chase cover for new construction, or you may need a replacement chase cover. It’s good to ask, what is a chimney chase cover made with? They are built with various materials and thicknesses. It is recommended that you choose a high-grade steel for a new chimney chase cover. Other important features include diagonal creases, a drip edge to divert water off your chimney, and a welded and sealed collar for the flue pipe to pass through.

If a chimney chase cover is properly fabricated, water will never pool on the top of the pan. If a chase cover is built with inferior steel, it will rust quickly.

Stainless steel

One of the best materials to use for a chimney chase cover is stainless steel, which will never rust. Although stainless steel chase covers are available to be fabricated out of 20- and 22-gauge steel, nothing thinner than 24-gauge steel could be recommended.

Copper

Copper chimney chase covers are the most expensive type, but they have superior resistance to corrosion. They can add to the aesthetics of your home with the natural patina that develops over time. Copper chimney chase covers are usually fabricated from 20-ounce copper.

Your budget option is to get a galvanized steel chimney chase cover. This type of steel rusts quickly, and you can expect to replace it within a few years. It is important to be aware that it is a short-term solution.  Keep a close watch for signs of chimney leaks.

Aluminum

An aluminum chimney chase cover is another budget option with a downside. Although it won’t rust, it is a soft metal. An aluminum chimney chase cover may not be reliable in harsh weather conditions.
